The short answer

Airalo's Indonesia eSIM listed the lowest Bali prices we could read on 4 October 2026: A$17.50 for 5 GB across 7 days, A$29.00 for 10 GB across 15 days, or A$39.50 for a week of unlimited data, slowed to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day. Simify's Indonesia (Bali) eSIM starts at A$29 for 5 GB in Australian dollars. Holafly is unlimited only, at US$27.50 for 7 days. Saily and Travelkon would not load.

The $5 a day pass, or an eSIM?

Bali is the short trip Australians take most, and a short trip is where the roaming pass puts up its best fight. Two taps, no second line, your number keeps working.

Telstra's Day Pass is $5 a day in Zone 1 and $10 a day in Zone 2, for 2 GB of data plus unlimited standard calls and SMS. Its page warns the pass "can take up to 2 hours to activate, so do it before you fly". The arithmetic below uses the $5 rate, so check which zone Indonesia sits in on your plan.

Here it is. The cheapest plan in the table below is Airalo's A$7.00 for 1 GB across 3 days, and two days of Day Pass costs A$10, so roaming passes it inside day two. For a normal week, Airalo's 5 GB across 7 days is listed at A$17.50 and seven Day Passes come to A$35. The eSIM is exactly half. Divide A$17.50 by $5 a day and the break-even is 3.5 days, so a four night Seminyak weekend already sits on the eSIM side of the line.

The pass still buys something. Two gigabytes a day across a week is 14 GB against 5 GB on that A$17.50 plan, and your Australian number keeps ringing, which matters if you are the one the office calls. Every eSIM here is data only. On a week in Bali the eSIM halves your data cost and asks for ten minutes in your phone settings before you leave.

There is no such thing as a Bali eSIM

Every provider sells an Indonesia plan and Bali is covered inside it. Airalo's page goes further and says its Indonesia eSIM "Covers includes, but not only, Bali, Java, Lombok and the Gili Islands", which is the line to read if your trip involves a boat. Simify labels its product "Indonesia (Bali) eSIM".

They differ in shape, not coverage. Airalo prices a ladder of fixed bundles in Australian dollars and adds an unlimited tier. Simify, an Australian seller, also bills in Australian dollars and starts at the larger end. Holafly sells unlimited days only, quoted in US dollars and left unconverted here. Most Bali trips run about a week, so compare the 7 day rungs first.

Saily and Travelkon appear without prices. Both sites blocked every request we made on 4 October 2026, and we did not borrow their figures from another comparison site, so their cells read "not published" until their own pages open for us. The detail is in Sources.

What a week in Bali actually costs

Same trip length, same comparison, listed prices only. For reference, seven Telstra Day Passes at $5 a day come to A$35.

The per day column is ours, not the provider's: it is the listed price divided by the days that plan runs for, which is the only way plans of different lengths can be set beside each other. Every other figure is the provider's own.

Reading the Bali table

Partner networks matter more here than on a city trip. Airalo's Indonesia page lists three: 3 (Hutchison), Indosat and Telkomsel. Holafly lists XL (Excelcom) and Telkomsel. Simify says the eSIM connects to the strongest available network without naming it. Away from the tourist strip, coverage varies between Indonesian carriers, so more than one partner network means more chances of a signal.

Airalo's unlimited plans in Indonesia carry the same daily condition as in Japan: "Lower speed rate of 1 Mbps after 3 GB usage per day". Its fixed plans are the cheapest figures in the table, and the 15 day rungs at A$19.00 for 5 GB and A$29.00 for 10 GB suit a trip running past a week.

Simify's Indonesia fixed plans run from A$29 for 5 GB over 7 days to A$219 for 100 GB over 90 days, and its unlimited plan is sold by the day at 5.40 in Australian dollars in the store's product feed. Both support hotspot and tethering.

Holafly's phone data is unlimited and its sharing is not. The page offers "1 GB of data per day" to share, which across a 7 day plan is 7 GB of hotspot for the trip.

The same thing, drawn

One line is the roaming pass adding up at a fixed rate a day. The other is one eSIM plan bought once. Where they cross is the day the pass starts costing more.

How to set up a travel eSIM before you fly

Do this at home on Wi-Fi, not at the airport. Ten minutes, once. If your provider's install email differs, follow the email.

  1. Check your phone takes an eSIM and is unlocked. Look for "Add eSIM" or "Add mobile plan" in your mobile settings. Phones bought on a carrier contract can stay locked until that contract ends, and every provider here publishes a compatibility list.
  2. Install it at home. You get a QR code, an activation code or an app prompt. Installing adds a second line. Label it "Travel".
  3. Point mobile data at the travel line. Leave your Australian line as the default for calls and SMS, so your number keeps working.
  4. Data roaming on for the travel line, off for your Australian one. The travel eSIM connects as a roaming line, so it needs roaming on. Switching it off on your home line is what stops your carrier billing you for background data.
  5. Leave the travel line off until you land. Airalo and Simify both say validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you install it, so installing weeks early costs nothing.
  6. On landing, give it a minute. The phone has to find a partner network. If nothing appears, toggle flight mode, confirm roaming is on for the travel line, then restart.

Questions people actually ask

Do I buy a Bali eSIM or an Indonesia eSIM?

An Indonesia eSIM. Bali is part of Indonesia and every provider in the table sells coverage at country level. Simify labels its product "Indonesia (Bali) eSIM", and Airalo's page says Bali, Java, Lombok and the Gili Islands are covered.

Will the eSIM work on Lombok, the Gili Islands or Nusa Penida?

Airalo's page names Lombok and the Gili Islands as covered. Holafly's and Simify's pages did not list individual islands in the sections we read. Coverage on small islands comes down to the partner network's towers, so more than one network means better odds of a signal.

Which Indonesian network will my eSIM use?

Airalo lists 3 (Hutchison), Indosat and Telkomsel. Holafly lists XL (Excelcom) and Telkomsel. Simify does not name its network. Saily's and Travelkon's pages would not load for us, so we cannot say.

Is unlimited data on a Bali eSIM really unlimited?

Airalo runs at full speed to 3 GB a day, then 1 Mbps for the rest of it. Holafly's phone data is unlimited with hotspot sharing capped at 1 GB a day. Simify says speeds may be reduced for up to 24 hours during very high usage.

Can I use the eSIM for ride share apps and maps?

Yes. Anything that runs over mobile data runs on these plans, including ride share, maps, translation and messaging. What you cannot do is dial from the eSIM's own number, because every plan we could read is data only.

The eSIM is not connecting now that I have landed. What do I check?

Three things, in order: the travel line is switched on, it is selected as the line for mobile data, and data roaming is on for that line. If it still shows no service, toggle flight mode, then restart the phone.

Saily and Travelkon: every page we requested on saily.com and travelkon.com.au on 4 October 2026 returned a Cloudflare access challenge (HTTP 403) instead of the page, with a desktop browser user agent, a mobile user agent and plain requests alike.
